Together with UNI-Africa we run a number of trade union networks in the region in this sector around a couple of companies. More big retail corporations are making their entry into the sector in the continent, making it imperative that we understand the dynamics as well as the push and pull factors. As the continent is big, we decided on an approach that divides the continent into sub-regions – Southern Africa, eastern Africa, West Africa and North Africa. To analyse developments in these sub-regions we will focus on the key retail companies that dominate in the regions. We will work around food retail companies in the beginning, within an idea of running a multi-year project. The identified companies are Shoprite, Massmart/Walmart, Nakumatt and Carrefour.
